Flood advice for homeowners |
|
Many homeowners are and
will be affected by severe floods across the country.
Towergate has issued
the following advice to homeowners to protect against flood
damage:
- As long as you have an up to date household buildings and
contents policy, you should be covered against damage by
flood
- People affected should contact their broker as soon as
possible. Telephone your broker as soon as possible to arrange
for repairs to be carried out
- Speak with your broker about an interim payment to help you
replace equipment and/or carry out repairs so that you can secure
your property
- Close up building openings and physically secure your property
(e.g. board up broken windows) to prevent additional rain damage
and looting
- Move as much as possible upstairs as soon as you hear the flood
alert
- Get advice where detailed, lengthy repairs are needed. Your
broker or loss adjuster can give advice on reputable contractors
and tradesmen if required
- If necessary arrange for temporary repairs to be carried out to
stop any damage getting worse. Keep receipts, as these will be
needed for your insurance claim
- Most policies will cover the cost of alternative accommodation
(up to a specified limit) if you need to move out of your home
while it is being repaired
- Comprehensive motor insurance will cover damage caused to
vehicles
- Do not use electricity or water supplies until the all clear is
given
- Where there has been flooding, disinfect floors and
furnishings. Where practical, leave doors, windows and cupboards
open. If possible, keep rooms heated
- Keep careful track of all losses and damage-related
expenditures. Document all losses with photographs or
video
- Do not destroy or throw away any damaged items without checking
first with your broker. Only move damaged material outside if it is
seriously in the way and exposure to the elements won't make damage
worse. Make sure your broker knows where to contact you
- Call the 24 hour Environment Agency floodline on 0845
988 1188 for information on flooding in your area.
